Taking Charge of Your Health Through Reflexology

August 1, 2016in Fitness & Movement 0 Comments 0 Likes

1) How does reflexology work?

There are literally millions of nerve endings in your fingers, hands, toes, and feet that supply sensory feedback to the central nervous system. The foot has more nerve endings per square inch than anywhere else in the body.

Reflexology stimulates the nerves through massage, which can help release stress, helping the body to regenerate and heal. The treatment encourages blood flow, improves circulation, strengthens the immune system, balancing hormones and helps with sleep.

2) What does research say about reflexology?

Research around the world indicates possible benefits of reflexology for various conditions, such as pain relief, relaxation, anxiety and depression. These research studies used fMRI (Functional magnetic resonance imaging) and EEG’s (electroencephalogram) readings after a reflexology session to measure the improvement on the patient, which had significantly improved.

3) What should a newbie to reflexology expect from a session with you?

A reflexology session lasts usually 60 minutes, which typically involves an assessment of the personal need of the client. I will ask questions about past and present medical history, any medication or supplements taken, and if the client is pregnant.

The treatment takes place with the client sitting upright on a massage table. I will assess the feet and note anything that indicates an imbalance. I use essential oils during the treatment and, based on the client’s individual needs, choose a suitable oil.

After some relaxation techniques, I will massage the feet first with a dry method followed by a cream technique, working with the client throughout the session to make sure that their needs are met.

4) How can reflexology benefit someone with a medical condition or pregnancy?

People with medical conditions often carry a lot of stress in their body due to pain, lack of sleep and general discomfort.

Reflexology is an amazing massage technique aiding relaxation, letting go of tension and deep-seated anxiety, which helps the body to heal.

This can be very beneficial during pregnancy as it elevates feelings of tiredness and nausea. It can also be a gentle and all natural treatment for constipation, water retention and back pain.

This massage technique can be very helpful postpartum, encouraging milk production and helping with recovery. Newborn babies and children of all ages benefit greatly from reflexology as well!

5) How do your sessions differ with the typical reflexology centers around the KL area?

Reflexology is a comprehensive massage therapy that requires knowledge about the body’s physiology and anatomy.

As a trained reflexologist, I will never diagnose anything, but I can give valuable feedback on the state of the client’s health and work on specific areas to help regain balance. I am also trained as a nutritional coach and use essential oils extensively, which I like to incorporate.

I can’t emphasize often enough that Reflexology does not have to be painful to be effective!
