It’s nearly impossible to find one single treatment that will aid each and every one of our maladies. From the physical (like back aches, headaches, and indigestion) to the mental (including stress and anxiety), the modern ailment is everywhere. Could Bowen Therapy help? We think so!
We sat down with our Alternative Clinic practitioner, Muna Winder to find out more on this holistic technique.
ESW: How did Bowen Therapy originate and gain its popularity?
MW: Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) began developing his technique in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia. He became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects. It gained popularity as isa simple, non-intrusive remedial therapy which stimulates the body to rebalance itself, and promotes healing, pain relief and the recovery of energy.
Bowen is cost effective and safe.

ESW: What can I expect during a session?
MW: You will be fully clothed, but please wear some loose clothes. Bowen therapy works on the fascia, the connective tissue that wraps around muscles, which can get blocked and cause pain – often somewhere else as the body compensates for the original injury.
During a session, I will palpate the tissue and look for tension throughout the whole body. My aim is to release the tension and give flow and relaxation.
For example, tensions in the chest will restrict the ability of the heart and lungs to function properly, tensions in the tissues of an organ will affect not only its function but also the wider structure by pulling the body in around the tension whether by lines of tension or by virtue of the pain being felt in the area.
ESW: Is it safe? Are there any side effects of the therapy?
MW: The Bowen technique is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neuromuscular complaint. It is a holistic treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms.
Side effects can range from muscle discomfort to headaches and all over soreness, which typically pass within 3 days. Some people experience excessive thirst and others feel tired or energized. It all depends on the client’s problem.
ESW: Do I need doctor’s clearance before going for a session?
MW: Generally, we can treat without any doctor’s clearance, however, we are interested in the client’s past and present medical history to understand what medication or aliments the client has suffered from.
